Kirikou and the Sorceress

Based on a West African folktale, this gorgeous animated film tells the story of Kirikou, a clever, courageous little boy, who is born in an African village upon which Karaba the Sorceress has placed a terrible curse. He sets out on a quest to free his village of the curse and find out the secret of why Karaba is so wicked. Featuring a score by acclaimed Senagalese musician, Youssou N'Dour.

 

Akeelah and the Bee

Akeelah Anderson is a precocious 11-year-old girl from South Los Angeles with a gift for words. Despite the objections of her mother, Akeelah is encouraged to enter spelling contests, for which she is tutored by the forthright Dr. Larabee, her school principal, and the proud residents of her neighborhood. Akeelah's aptitude earns her an opportunity to compete for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and, in turn, unite her neighborhood, who witness the courage and inspiration of one amazing little girl. Featuring performances by KeKe Palmer, Angela Bassett, and Laurence Fishburne.
